DES MOINES – The Iowa Barnstormers have signed running back Malik Brown and wide receiver Thomas Shuler to the 2019 roster, Head Coach Dixie Wooten announced today.
Brown (6-1, 205, Southern Utah University) joins the Iowa Barnstormers for his rookie Indoor Football League (IFL) season. Collegiately, Brown played four seasons at Southern Utah University where he started in 30 total games. In his senior season, Brown led the Thunderbirds in rushing yards with 885, collecting eight touchdowns, 17 receptions and 127 receiving yards. Brown also earned honors as First Team All-Conference two times.
"Malik is a physical running back with quickness and speed. He has great vision and he's an excellent blocker," said Coach Wooten. "He gives us another threat in the run game. We love to stay balanced and having a 'one-two punch' at running back helps us a lot."
Shuler (5-9, 195, Marshall University) joins the Iowa Barnstormers for his first season with the team. Collegiately, Shuler played three years at Marshall University as a standout receiver. During his time with the Thundering Herd, Shuler started in 38 total games and racked up several school records. Shuler is one of eight receivers in Marshall history to have two 100-catch seasons and one of two receivers in Marshall history to have three seasons of 1,000 or more yards. Shuler also earned honors all three seasons as an All-Conference Selection.
Following his collegiate career, Shuler spent time in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the Montreal Alouettes before joining the now defunct Spokane Empire's Training Camp in 2017. During the 2018 season, Shuler signed with the German Football League's Allgau Comets.
"Thomas brings another dynamic weapon to our wide receiver corps," said Coach Wooten. "He's fast, physical, and he's a monster on special teams. He's going to bring that big play threat that I love to have."
